Growing new stuff from old stuff!

I started growing celery from the bottom of a store-bought bunch.  I never knew you could do this, but it's doing great.  I transplanted it in one of the boxes after letting it sit in a bowl of water for a few days.

I also am planting a pineapple from the top of a store-bought pineapple.

I pulled the leaves off the bottom, let it air dry for a few days then placed it in a mason jar filled with water.  It took about 3 weeks until new roots started growing.

In about 14 months, I should have a new pineapple ready to harvest!

  2. Love the celery idea. We will have to stop giving them to the rabbits and try this. Thanks! Blessings from Wisconsin!

  3. Oooh...cool! I didn't know you could do that with celery! I do green onions that way. I always have them on hand, and just keep them in a jar of water on the counter. As I snip them off, new shoots come up to take their place. I can stretch one store-bought bunch to last about 2-3 months!

  4. Amanda, I did the celery idea, much to the doubts of my girls and husband...guess what in only a few days, I have sprouts. In your picture, looks like you just planted it right in the ground...is that correct. The middle is about 1/2" above cut end...do I wait a bit longer. I already have another one going in a glass by my kitchen window. I have planted celery from a plant from a store - years ago. I think you put them in like a cylinder to keep them growing straight up - like a recycled liter bottle. What do you do? Thanks for the idea! Blessing from Wisconsin...again.

  6. Dicky Bird, mine is about 3" long so far. I let it sit in some water for a couple days then I just planted it in the ground in the greenhouse. It's doing great in there! It will be nice having fresh celery on hand all the time, too! Thanks for the tip on the cylinder, I have a liter bottle that I can use.

  7. LOlo,

Do you change the water on the green onions? and do you keep it in the sun or just normal light? I so regret i just heard about this after tossing the ends of my csa green onions - but i could pick some up at a farmer's market - i think to go to this trouble i would want to start with a good product. Thanks so much Amanda!

  8. Wife of Stefano, when I did my green onions in water, I just placed them in a about 2" of water, in the sun. I prefer to just shove them in a pot of dirt in my kitchen window....you can't kill these things and they grow fast!
